Please read this policy carefully before signing your intake form. This policy explains how Palmer Chiropractic handles billing once your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance coverage has been exhausted following a motor vehicle accident.

What is PIP Coverage?

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is a type of auto insurance coverage that pays for medical expenses resulting from a motor vehicle accident, regardless of who was at fault. In Washington State, PIP coverage is commonly included in auto insurance policies and is often the primary source of payment for chiropractic care following an accident.

PIP coverage has a maximum benefit amount. Once that maximum is reached, your PIP coverage is considered "exhausted." This policy explains what happens to your chiropractic care and billing at that point.

Our Clinic Policy

Palmer Chiropractic Clinic Policy Re: PIP Exhaustion

Here at Palmer Chiropractic Clinic it is our policy that once your personal injury protection coverage through your car insurance has exhausted, we will not bill your health insurance for further visits related to injuries sustained in the motor vehicle accident. We will require that you secure legal representation and we will hold our bills awaiting payment from your MVA settlement.

What This Means for You

Once your PIP coverage has been exhausted, the following applies to your continued care at Palmer Chiropractic:

1. We will not bill your health insurance for visits related to your motor vehicle accident injuries. This is because your MVA-related injuries are considered a liability matter, and your health insurance should not be responsible for injuries caused by another party's negligence.

2. You will be required to secure legal representation. An experienced personal injury attorney can protect your rights, negotiate with insurance companies on your behalf, and ensure you receive fair compensation for your injuries and medical expenses.

3. We will hold our bills awaiting settlement. Palmer Chiropractic will continue to provide necessary care and will place our outstanding bills in a lien against your MVA settlement. This means you will not be required to pay out of pocket while your case is pending — our fees will be paid from your settlement proceeds.

Why We Have This Policy

This policy is designed to protect you as our patient. Billing your health insurance for accident-related injuries could reduce your health insurance benefits for non-accident care, may create complications with your personal injury claim, and could result in your health insurer seeking reimbursement from your settlement — reducing the amount you ultimately receive.

By holding our bills and working through your MVA settlement, we ensure that the at-fault party's insurance — not your health insurance — pays for injuries they caused. This approach maximizes your recovery and protects your health insurance benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an attorney?
Once your PIP is exhausted, yes — we will require that you have legal representation before we can continue care on a lien basis. If you do not have an attorney, our office can provide referrals to experienced personal injury attorneys in the Kent and greater Seattle area.

Will I have to pay anything out of pocket?
No. Once a lien arrangement is established through your attorney, you will not pay out of pocket for your care. Our fees will be paid from your settlement.

What if I choose not to pursue a legal claim?
If you decide not to pursue a personal injury claim, you would be responsible for payment at the time of service once PIP is exhausted. Please speak with our front desk to discuss your options.

How do I know when my PIP is running out?
Your auto insurance company will notify you as your PIP benefits are being used. We recommend contacting your insurance adjuster regularly to monitor your remaining benefits. Our office can also help you track your PIP usage.
