Epsom salt is made from magnesium sulfate — a naturally occurring mineral widely used to soak swollen, injured muscles. Palmer Chiropractic recommends Epsom salt therapy as a safe, effective home remedy after exercise, injury, or extended physical activity. Available over the counter at any drugstore or grocery store, it is an affordable and practical addition to your recovery routine.
How It Works

Magnesium Absorption

As your skin absorbs magnesium from the Epsom salt solution, it works to combat inflammation and reduce swelling. Inflammation depletes magnesium — soaking helps replenish it directly at the injury site.

Muscle & Nerve Support

Magnesium is an essential electrolyte that promotes healthy muscle and nerve function. Regular use helps reduce muscle cramping, soreness, and hypersensitivity following repetitive strain or overuse injuries.

Inflammation Relief

Soaking swollen body parts in Epsom salt solution directly reduces localized swelling and joint irritation — particularly effective after running, heavy lifting, or acute sprains and strains.

Toxin Removal

Warm Epsom salt water draws out toxins through the skin while relieving swelling. This may also benefit migraine headaches, fibromyalgia pain, and general muscle fatigue.

Full Body Bath
1

Fill your bathtub with warm water

Use comfortably warm water — not scalding hot. Hot water can increase inflammation rather than reduce it.

2

Add 2 cups of Epsom salt

Pour 2 cups of Epsom salt into the running water and stir to dissolve completely before getting in.

3

Soak for 15–20 minutes

Relax in the tub as you normally would. Rinse off with clean water afterward. Palmer Chiropractic recommends soaking after running or extensive exercise to help prevent inflammation and irritation in joints and muscles.

Warm Epsom Salt Compress — For Targeted Injury Relief

  1. Dissolve 2 cups of Epsom salt in 1 gallon of warm water in a bucket or large bowl.
  2. Submerge a clean towel in the solution and wring out the excess.
  3. Wrap the warm, wet towel around the injured body part — neck, shoulder, knee, ankle, or lower back.
  4. Leave in place for 15–20 minutes. Re-warm the towel in the solution as needed.
  5. Repeat 1–2 times daily during the acute phase of injury or muscle soreness.

⚠️ Important Considerations

  • Epsom salt has a strong laxative effect when taken internally — this is a topical therapy only.
  • Keep the solution away from small children and pets who may accidentally ingest it. If ingested, call Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
  • Some individuals are allergic to magnesium sulfate. If you experience shortness of breath, facial swelling, or hives — discontinue use immediately and call your doctor.
  • If your injury is causing significant pain and swelling, consult Brian J. Bussard DC before beginning Epsom salt therapy.
  • Do not use on open wounds, broken skin, or infected areas.
